Mark Borchelt - Junior Men, Club Crews
Mark Borchelt comes to Austin Rowing Club by way of Potomac Boat Club in Washington, DC where he coached the men's sweep team. Prior to that, he coached high school rowers at TC Williams High School in Alexandria, Virginia - the same school where he himself learned to row as a junior. Mark has an impressive rowing resume, he was a member of the US National Team from 1973 to 1980. In 1976 he traveled to the Olympics as the spare for the US Team. In 1973 and 1975 he placed first at the Royal Henley Regatta in the pair (setting a course record) and the straight four. In 1980, Mark was named to the US team who, sadly, did not compete at the Moscow Olympics, but Mark saw great success on the Olympic European Tour that same year. As part of the European tour, Mark won the coxed pair at the Bosbaan Regatta in Amsterdam (the namesake of the ARC quad).
Jennifer de Haas - Head Coach, Junior Women
Jennifer began her rowing career as a student at the University of Texas, where she majored in photojournalism and studio art, she later received her Masters Degree in Exercise Physiology from UT. She has been a member of Austin Rowing Club since 1993, and has coached with the ARC juniors for over 10 years. Jennifer holds a US Rowing Level 3 Coaching Certification.
Alden Hall - Club Crews
Chelsea Moore - Masters Women's Racing Team, Club Crews Chelsea Moore first started rowing at the University of Oklahoma where she was a instrumental in the success of the new Division I Women's Rowing program. In 2010, she won accolades as a member of the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association All-South Region Team, All Academic Team, and All-Conference USA Team. She began coaching at her alma mater as the graduate assistant while earning her degree in Intercollegiate Athletics Administration. Since moving to Austin in 2011, Chelsea has been coaching at Austin Rowing Club with both the junior and masters programs.
Patrick Kelly - Club Crews, Sculling Patrick has been coaching rowing for 15 years at the Club, Masters and Collegiate Division I Level. He has coached crews to championships at several top events, including the San Diego Crew Classic, the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships, and the West Coast Conference Championships. Patrick began his rowing career in college at Loyola Marymount University and continues to row. He holds three Masters National Championship titles (2003, 2006, 2006) and has been a member of the US Surfboat Rowing team, competing in World Surfboat Rowing Championships in Australia and Italy. Patrick is a USRowing Level 3 certified coach and rows and coaches both sculling and sweep boats.
John Mitrowski - Masters Racing Team
Tim Poole - Junior Novice Men
Tim learned to row sweep as a lightweight rower with Texas Crew in 2006, and soon after learned sculling at ARC in 2007. He began coaching in 2008, and works with the ARC Junior Program, as well as ARC Club Crews. Tim has a BA in English from University of Texas at Austin.
Liz Record - Club Crews Liz Record comes to ARC after coaching at UC San Diego for thye past 4 years as the assistant varsity coach and novice coach. In 2007 and 2008 the women's varsity crew placed 2nd at the NCAA Championships, the team's best placement at the Division II level. In the 2006-07 season, Liz helped the rowing team to a novice eight grand finals appearance and a novice lightweight four third-place finish at the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships (WIRA). During the 2005-06 season, Record coached the novice squad to an undefeated dual season and first-place finishes at Berg Cup and San Diego City Championships. The novice eight would go on to place second at the WIRA Championships. Liz has also coached at several Junior and Master's camps as well as Learn-to-Row camps over the past 8 years, she has a Level 2 USRA Coaching Certification.
Scott Robinson - Club Crews Scott joins ARC from coaching at Middlebury College, where he spent time as both the Novice and lightweight coach in 2009, and has lead crews to medals in multiple championship regattas. Scott has coached at the Craftsbury sculling camp in Vermont and the Thompson Boat Club in Washington, DC. Scott focuses on boat-speed, video review, and bringing small-boat skills into 4's and 8's.
Brock Sampson - Intro to Rowing, Junior Program
Brock's first rowing experience was at an ARC Learn-To-Row Day in 2008. From then, he's spent most of his free time on the water in some capacity, whether it's coaching the ARC Junior Programs, or competing with the ARC Competitive Men's Program. Brock says "I love rowing because of its access to the earth's elements, ability to bring life-long fitness opportunity to the community, and it's ability to establish and sustain self-confidence in our youth early in their lives!"
Brock cites the opportunity to earn medals in several local regattas, competing in Boston at the the 2010 Head of the Charles Regatta, and competing at the 2010 Royal Canadian Henley Regatta as his proudest achievements. Brock currently coaches for the ARC Junior Boys Competitive Program, as well as the Junior Recreational Program. Brock is a Concept2 certified Indoor Rowing coach and a USRowing Level II certified coach.
