YOUTH LEARN-TO-ROW SUMMER CAMPS 2011
Info for Camps FOR EXPERIENCED ROWERS
Why Rowing: • Fun and Different: Rowing is like no other sport you have ever tried. Whether you are interested in rowing for recreation, fitness or competition, there is something in it for everyone. • New Friends: Rowing is an opportunity to meet students from all over the greater Austin area. • The Ultimate Team Sport: There are no superstars in rowing. Everyone has to work together to make a boat move so all rowers are important to a team's success. • Collegiate Possibilities:Most of the top Universities have rowing as a varsity or club sport and often recruit high school rowers.
Camp Overview: If you are a student entering 7th through 12th grade and would like to learn how to row, you are invited to participate in our camps. Each camp lasts one week and consists of five two-hour sessions held Monday through Friday. Most camps are held in the morning from 7:00 - 9:00 AM to beat the heat. Not a morning person, we have added evening camps from 6-8 PM.
Each student will learn the fundamentals of the rowing stroke, rowing terminology, rowing safety and about the physical benefits of rowing. Students will row in both individual and team boats. On the last day of camp (Friday) we will host an informal race between all campers. Parents are welcome to attend.
The cost for each camp is $150 and includes a camp t-shirt. Registration is on a first come basis and each camp is limited to 12 rowers to give personalized attention. Each camp is taught by a qualified rowing instructor. No previous rowing experience is needed.
Registration Information:
Attendance, Cancellation and Refunds:Attendance on all days is very important: the first day is mandatory. Absence from the first day may result in being dropped from the camp with no registration refund, so check your calendar carefully when choosing a camp. What to wear and bring:Cycling or running shorts with t-shirts and socks are recommended. Bring extra clothing, especially socks. Wear shoes that will not slip on wet surfaces. In hot weather, use sunscreen, hats & visors. Always bring a water bottle. We will provide the water and sports drinks. Its important to stay hydrated especially during hot weather workouts. In cool weather, wear layers of close-fitting garments. Do not wear good clothing, since there is grease on some of the equipment.Weather:Camp will always meet at the scheduled time. In case of thunderstorms, or if the water is too rough to row, a film presentation or land workout will replace the rowing. We will row in light rain, provided other conditions are favorable.Directions & Parking:Information on directions and parking around ARC can be found here.Questions & Contacts:Further questions can be sent to the camp director at juniors@austinrowing.org |
