Competitive programs are full for spring 2012. The non-racing programs are expected to fill-up for spring 2012 and registration is taken on a first come basis. Registration for these programs will open early December.
We offer three programs to fit your schedule and goals for rowing this spring. No experience is required for any of our programs. The middle school and non-competitive high school program provide the opportunity to learn to row or sharpen your skills without a big time commitment while our competitive program offers a more rigorous approach to rowing. If you are need of financial assistance for any of our junior programs please see our scholarship application. For further information please contact a coach: juniors@austinrowing.org
Competitive ProgramDuring the school year the Austin Rowing Club offers a competitive rowing program for 8th-12th grade students. The Austin Rowing Club Juniors is the oldest youth rowing program in Austin and one of the fastest teams in Texas. You do not need any rowing experience to join the competitive program. If you are interested in discovering your potential as a rower, working hard, making friends from all over Austin, being part of a team, traveling and competing in local, regional, and national regattas, and most importantly having fun, then we invite you to join our competitive program. Rowers from our program have gone on to row in college on scholarship, coach high school and college rowing, and have won numerous National Youth titles. Discover your potential this fall.
The fall program runs from the end of August (at the start of the school year) through the second week of December. The spring program runs from January through the end of April. The calendar shows start and end dates for the upcoming season. Rowers in their first year of competition start on the novice squad and should refer the the novice practice times and race schedule. After a year of racing rowers move to the varsity squad. PE credit is available for both varsity and novice teams (read below for AISD PE information).
Non-Competitive Program (February 19-May 20)
The non-competitive program is open to 8th-12th grade students who would like to row but are unable or uninterested in racing. The class meets on Tuesday (5-6:30 PM) and Sundays (2-4 PM) and rowers can attend once or twice a week. The focus of the program is to develop basic and intermediate rowing skills, improve fitness, and meet other kids from around Austin. The program is split between an experienced class (rowers who have completed one full semester at ARC) and a novice class for new rowers. This program does not practice enough hours to meet local school districts PE credit requirements. Please see the competitive program information for PE credit.
Rowers must register online to secure a place in the program. New rowers need to also fill out a registration packet and bring with you to the first class day. Returning rowers from the fall class do not need to submit a registration packet.
Middle School Program (February 19-May 20)The middle school program (6th-8th grade) is an opportunity for youth to get a head start on rowing. This is a non-competitive program to introduce middle school students to rowing. Students will learn the fundamentals of rowing, equipment care, water safety, and get a good workout in a fun environment. The program meets on Sundays. The program is split between an experienced class (rowers who have completed one full semester at ARC) from 12-2 PM and a novice class for new rowers from 2-4 PM. This program does not practice enough hours to meet local school districts PE credit requirements. Please see the competitive program information for PE credit.
