Juniors win 17 medals at Pumpkin Head

The Pumpkin Head Regatta, hosted by the Austin Rowing Club, proved to be a great event for the junior’s team.  All squads competed, bringing home 17 medals including 6 gold!  The Pumpkin Head regatta is the largest fall regatta in the region with over 450 boats racing on Saturday, October 31.

Building on success from the Woodlands regatta on October 17, the novice squads continued to improve and get faster.  In the quad events the novice girls were up first and finished an impressive second and third in the event.  The novice boys followed with a second place finish.  ARC brought home gold in the novice girls eight and second in the girl’s novice four.  Finishing out the day in the novice girl’s single, Nicole Brandt won the silver and in the girl’s recreation singles Alexis Serrao took second closely followed by Brittany David in third place.

Last years Texas State Champions, Jake Marten and Forrest Compton, continued their winning streak with a gold in the varsity boys double.  They finished almost a minute over the second place team.   They raced against each other in the varsity single finishing top two and Jake just edging out Forrest for the gold.  Andrew Martens rowed a strong race to win bronze in the lightweight men’s single.

The varsity girls started the day with tight racing in the lightweight junior double.  Ellen Denum and Nikki Ulug finished third by one tenth of a second over teammates Brett Mele and Mariel Dempster.  In another close race Sara Hyten won the gold in the varsity single.  Next up, Sara partnered with Katie Gilbert to win the bronze in the varsity double race.  The girls topped off the regatta with a strong showing in the varsity eight and a gold medal.

Big thanks to all of the parents who helped make this a successful regatta!
