ARC Juniors Successful at Youth Nationals
The ARC Juniors raced at the US Rowing Youth National Championships in Cincinnati, Ohio on June 12-14. The team qualified 12 rowers from the Central Regional Championships to race at this regatta. The trip to Ohio started off stormy, with the boat trailer dodging tornadoes in Missouri, and the Dallas airport closed down, stranding most of the ARC team in Texas. Faced with the possibility of not arriving in Cincinnati by race time, the parents loaded up the rowers in cars and drove through the night to arrive in Cincinnati only hours before the first race. The team showed great determination and focus, racing on adrenaline and no sleep for a strong start to the 3-day regatta. All boats advanced from the heats to the semi finals.
After a good night's rest, the second day of racing improved and the weather was great. The first final for the team was the girls lightweight 2x 'C' final where ARC finished 3rd for an overall ranking of 15th in the nation. The girls had one of the best races of the year. As some of the youngest competitors in the regatta at 16, Katie and Brett have a bright future in rowing.
The final day of racing included the petite and grand finals. The girls double of Allison and Sara finished 2nd in the petite final for an overall 8th place finish. The girls held off a strong sprint from the other teams to maintain their second place finish. The boys double competed next, winning the petite final. The boys made some adjustments from the semi-finals the day before and had a strong command of the race from start to finish. Their overall finish was 7th in the nation.
The inaugural year for the pair event displayed a large turnout of fast competitors. The ARC entry of Ariel and Susan represented the team well for our first entry in the event. The ARC boat has been gaining speed all season and finished 5th in the petite final for an overall finish of 11th.
The final race of the day for ARC came in the girls quad event. This was the only ARC boat to make the grand final and the competition was very tight for 2nd-6th place. Placement changed throughout the 2k race with ARC in 3rd place at one point. The girls were having their best race of the season and felt great. ARC was just edged out in the last 250m to finish 6th overall in the nation. Gabby, Marie Claire, Heather, Erin had a great race and the best overall finish for the ARC team.
